Why you will love this homemade cherry crisp with chocolate chips
Easy: The hardest part of this recipe is removing the cherry pits! I love the simplicity of the crisp topping and how quickly it comes together!
Seasonal: Every year, I look forward to cherry season! We are not able to get fresh cherries year-round and making the most of this sweet fruit is a must every summer. It makes this cherry crisp special and makes the most out of the seasonal ingredients.
Delicious: The cherry chocolate combo is just so delicious!
What you will need to make this crisp
Old fashioned rolled oats: Old fashioned rolled oats work the best with this recipe. You can use steel cut or quick oats, but the texture will be changed with this swap.
Wheat Flour or All-purpose flour: I usually use wheat flour in this crisp and cannot even tell. But feel free to use all-purpose flour or a 1:1 ratio gluten-free flour.
Butter: Cold butter cut into small pieces will give this crisp the perfect texture.
Brown Sugar: Sweetens ups the oat crisp topping.
Cinnamon & Nutmeg: Adds a little extra flavor to the crisp.
Cherries: The star of this dessert! You can use fresh cherries or frozen cherries. You can use the cherries frozen without thawing them for this crisp recipe.
Honey: The honey adds a touch of sweetness the cherry mixture.
Vanilla Extract: Adds the flavors
Lemon juice: Lemon juice adds a bright citrus flavor.
Cornstarch: Helps create a thicker cherry crisp.

Tips and tricks
- To get the pits removed the fastest from the cherries, use a cherry pitter. They can come in single cherry removal or multi-cherry pit removal. Ideally, go with the multi-cherry one for faster results, but to be honest I only have the singe one and it works just fine. If you don’t have a cherry pit removal tool, you can carefully cut out the pits. Just be sure you get all the pits removed prior to adding them to the baking pan.
- You can use your favorite chocolate in the oat topping. Chocolate chips, chocolate bar cut into chunks, mini chocolate chips, dark or milk chocolate. Personalize the recipe to your liking! And if you are not feeling the chocolate, feel free to leave them out.
- If you want to make this cherry crisp a sweet breakfast, just add a scoop of yogurt in place of the ice cream!
- Once the cherry crisp has cooled, it is best to store it covered in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. I like to just reheat each piece individually in the microwave for a few seconds to warm it back up. But it also good cold right from the fridge!
