I love the month October. There is something special about the shift to crisp nights, changing colors, and Halloween decorations popping up that makes walks extra interesting. We do not do a lot of Halloween decorations at our house, but still try to make this time of the year fun. And one thing I have learned about being a mom to two young kids, is that the little things can make this time of the year feel special. Especially using cookie cutters to make food more fun and festive.

But do not get me wrong, this Halloween toast just for the kids! They are spicy and have garlic bread vibes that are perfect for the grown-ups too!

What is eggs in a hole?

Eggs in a hole (or one of the many name variations), is a simple breakfast or brunch recipe where an egg is cooked in the center of slice of bread. It is an easy and pretty straight forward meal that does not require many ingredients or time. And one that is always a hit with my kids.

I made a few changes to recipe in that the butter is flavored with garlic and oregano and then dipped into grated parmesan cheese. This gives the bread it self so much FLAVOR! It taste a lot like garlic bread! Just with an spicy egg in the middle!

Other names for eggs in a hole

I grew up calling this dish eggs in a hole. But there are so many different names I have heard others use for this egg toast. I have seen egg in a basket, toad in the hole, bullseye egg, eggs in a nest, and popeyed eggs. I know there are more names beyond the ones I listed!

Whatever you call it, its is delicious!

Ingredients you will need

Bread: This recipe makes two eggs in a hole toast, so you will need two slices of hearty bread. I used sourdough bread but you can use any large slice of bread you love. Just be sure it is large enough to for the cookie cutter of choice.

Butter: You will need softened butter to mix with the garlic powder and dried oregano. You can used salted or unsalted butter. I recommend adding a pinch of salt of using unsalted butter.

Garlic Powder: Gives the toast garlic bread vibes.

Dried Oregano: Adds a little more flavor to the bread. You can swap for another dried herb, such as parsley or Italian.

Parmesan Cheese: Grated parmesan is pressed onto slices of bread prior to adding to the skillet. I recommend using freshly grated parmesan cheese as pre-grated cheese sometimes has an anti-caking agent that can interfere with the melting of the cheese.

Salt and Pepper: Season the eggs with salt and pepper to taste.

Eggs: You will need one egg per slice of bread.

Chili Crisp: Chili crisp takes the eggs to the next level! You can omit if you wish.

What cookie cutter shapes to use

You can do any shape you wish, as long as it fits inside the bread without breaking the crust! I did ghost for Halloween because they fit the best in my bread, but the options are endless. And you can switch this up for any Holiday! Go with hearts for Valentines day, trees for Christmas, or just keep it classic with the round hole! The Garlic and parmesan adds so much flavor that this egg toast recipe stands out without any fun shapes!

Expert Tips

  1. Test fit your cookie cutter on your slice of bread to make sure it fit without breaking the crust at all.
  2. You can use your bread of choice, just make sure it a large slice and pretty hearty. If the bread is too thin, it might not hold the egg well.
  3. Firmly press the bread into the grated parmesan cheese. You your hands to help press it onto the bread if needed.
  4. Keep the heat on the skillet medium-low while cooking the egg so prevent it from burning on the bottom.
  5. Serve on the eggs in a hole on its own, with avocado (my personal favorite), fruit, small salad or anything else of your choice!
