Ripe bananas: You will need 4 overripe bananas to make this recipe.

Eggs: Eggs provide structure to the bread.

Sour Cream: Adds moisture to the quick loaf.

Neutral oil: Neutral oil keeps this banana bread moist. Avocado, canola or vegetable oil are great options.

Vanilla Extract: Adds to the flavor of the chocolate chip banana bread.

Brown sugar: The added brown sugar creates a more caramel flavor while adding moisture to the bread.

Sugar: The combination of the white sugar and brown sugar creates the perfect balance of sweetness and flavor.

All-purpose flour: All-purpose flour is used in this banana bread recipe. If you need to make the recipe gluten-free, use a 1:1 ratio gluten free flour, such as Bobs Red Mill 1:1 Baking Flour.

How to make chocolate chip banana bread with crumble topping

  1. Preheat the oven 350 degrees F. Grease or line with parchment paper a 9×5 loaf pan.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, add the flour, salt and baking soda. Whisk together and set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, add the ripe bananas. Mash completely. Add the eggs, sugars, sour cream, oil, and vanilla extract. Whisk together until smooth.
  4. Pour the dry ingredients into the wet and stir until just combined. Add the chocolate chips and fold into the batter.
  5. To make the crumble topping, combine the flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon together in a medium bowl. Stir. Pour over the the melted butter and stir until fully mixed.
  6. Add the banana bread batter to the loaf pan. Evenly sprinkle the crumble mixture over the banana bread batter. Bake for 45-55 minutes or until the batter is fully set and a tooth pick comes out clean when inserted into the center of the bread. Let the bread cool slightly before enjoying!

Be sure to not overmix the batter when adding the dry ingredients into the wet. You will want to stir together until the ingredients are just combined. It is OK if there are some lumps. And just gently fold in the chocolate chips. Over mixing can cause a dense banana bread.

Yes, you can make this recipe gluten free by using a 1:1 ratio gluten free flour such as Bobs Red Mills Gluten Free Flour. I have not tested the recipe with oat or almond flour and do not recommend as a replacement for the all-purpose flour.

How to tell my bananas are ripe enough?

Using overripe bananas are key to creating the best banana bread. Make sure your banana have no green on the peel. They should have brown spots and be soft to the touch.

Can I make this recipe without chocolate chips?

No chocolate chips, no problem! You can skip the chocolate all together. Or you can add in chocolate bar crushed into small piece or nuts of your choice.

Can I freeze this chocolate chip banana bread?

Yes, you can freeze the banana bread up to 3 months. To freeze the bread, let it cool completely. You can slice it or keep the loaf whole. Wrap tightly with plastic wrap followed by foil. Label the date on the foil and freeze. When ready to eat, you can defrost in the refrigerator.

  • 4 ripe bananas
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 C. (55 g) Brown Sugar
  • 1/4 C. (50 g) Sugar
  • 1/4 C. (60 g) Sour Cream
  • 1 tsp. (1 tsp.) Vanilla extract
  • 1/2 C. (120 ml) Oil
  • 2 C. (250 g) All-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. Baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. Salt
  • 3/4 C. (135 g) Chocolate Chips

Crumble Topping

  • 1/2 C. (63 g) All-Purpose Flour
  • 1/4 C. (55 g) Brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. Cinnamon
  • 4 Tbsp. (60 ml) Butter (melted)
